From this remarkable heritage emerged Seylan Gems, a family-owned gemstone enterprise founded on generations of experience, integrity, and a lifelong dedication to Sri Lanka's precious gemstone legacy.
The story of Seylan Gems began in the early 1960s with our founder, Mr. Abdul Gafoor, who inherited his passion for gemstones from his late father and entered the gemstone trade at the age of 19.
A gemstone's true value begins with trust — trust between the earth, the miner, and the person who treasures it.
Beginning his journey by purchasing gemstones directly from village miners across Ratnapura's renowned gem-bearing regions — including Kahawatta, Neelagama, Opanayake, Pelmadulla, Rakwana, and surrounding villages — he built something far more valuable than a business: lasting trust and lifelong relationships with local mining communities.
His honesty, fairness, and genuine respect for miners earned him a reputation as one of the most trusted gemstone buyers in the region. For many village miners, Seylan Gems became the first choice when bringing their precious discoveries to market. This strong foundation of trust became the cornerstone that carried our family business from local villages to the international gemstone arena.
Ratnapura — the “City of Gems”. Even today, gem traders gather on Ratnapura's streets each morning to examine, negotiate, and trade rough stones by natural daylight — a tradition Seylan Gems has been part of since our founder's very first purchase.
What began as a small family venture in Ratnapura gradually evolved into a respected name in Sri Lanka's gemstone industry.
At just 19, our founder began purchasing gemstones directly from village miners across Ratnapura's gem-bearing regions, building the trust that would define our family business.
Our first branch opened in Kahawatta, strengthening our connection with local miners and expanding our gemstone sourcing network.
Our Colombo branch opened, creating closer connections with local and international gemstone buyers and expanding our presence beyond Ratnapura.
